Autumn Budget Announcement

Nov 5, 2024General, Newsletter

At the end of October the Chancellor, Rt Hon Rachel Reeves MP, delivered Labour’s first budget for 14 years. We’d like to highlight parts of the budget that may impact unpaid family carers and their cared-for below:

Carer’s Allowance
From April 2025, the rate will remain at £81.90 but the cap on earnings is increasing. That means unpaid family carers may be eligible for Carer’s Allowance if earning up to £195 a week (nearly £10,000 per year), up from £151.

Household Support Fund
The Government will provide £1 billion from next year to extend the Household Support Fund, supporting more with any extra living costs. This will be available through councils.

“Triple lock” for Pensioners
Spending on the state pension is projected to rise 4.1% in 2025-26. That is a £470 increase for over 12 million pensioners in the UK. Pensioners should also check if you’re eligible for Pension Credit (extra money to help with living costs) before 21st December 2024 to be able to get the Winter Fuel Payment: Pension Credit: How to claim – GOV.UK

Freeze Fuel Duty
For those carers who rely on driving, Chancellor Rachel Reeves has decided not to increase fuel duty. This means the current 5p-per-litre discount on petrol and diesel will remain in place. We have additional information and advice on travel for carers and those you care for in our transport guide.

We’ve included links to articles from Carers Trust, Carers UK and .GOV if you’d like to read more about the Autumn budget. Plus Mobilise have created a helpful Winter Finances Guide which carers may find useful.
