Working together to help Young Carers thrive

At Action for Family Carers, we know that working with other organisations can help us give carers the best possible support.

By bringing together our different skills, knowledge and experience, we can create more opportunities for carers and achieve better outcomes for the people we support.

Our work with Care 4 Carers Club and Elmwood Farm Stables is a great example of this in action.

Through our Young Carer team, we support weekly equine sessions for Young Carers in the Maldon, Dengie and Burnham areas through Care 4 Carers Club and their Horsomely sessions.

These free sessions give young carers the chance to learn new skills, spend time with others who understand their caring role and enjoy time away from the pressures of caring.

Over the summer, the teams at Elmwood Farm and Care 4 Carers also came together to put on a special family fun day for young carers, their families and friends.

It was a chance to have fun, make new friends and try something a little different – including horse riding and other activities at the farm.

Most importantly, it gave families the opportunity to spend time together in a welcoming and inclusive space.

A day that made a real difference

We received some lovely feedback from families who came along:

“It was so nice to attend an event as a family where people didn’t stare at my disabilities, and everyone was welcoming and inclusive.”

“My daughter had the best time at this event. She enjoyed spending time with other young carers and had the opportunity to ride a horse, something she has never been able to access before.”

“Anne, David and the team were so welcoming and their hospitality was incredible. I am very grateful to them for enabling my family to enjoy some time together over the summer.”

“My child enjoyed every part of the day, especially the horse ride and the pool. Thank you so much for an amazing event.”

For some families, opportunities like this can make a real difference. They can help young carers feel seen, included and understood, while giving them the chance to enjoy experiences they may not otherwise have access to.

Supporting Young Carers to thrive

A huge thank you to the lovely team at Elmwood Farm and to Barbara at Care 4 Carers for helping to make such a brilliant day possible.

It is also a great example of the work our Young Carer Co-ordinators make possible by building strong links with organisations and services in their local communities.

By working together, we can open up more opportunities for young carers, help them build confidence and skills, and support them to achieve their goals – both now and in the future.

Weekly opportunities for Young Carers

The Young Carers Horsomely sessions run weekly and are open to young carers and their families in the Maldon, Dengie and Burnham areas.

The sessions offer a chance to:
Spend some unique time with the ponies
Meet other young carers
Build confidence
Learn practical and life skills

If you know a young person in the Maldon, Dengie or Burnham areas who could benefit, please share this opportunity with them, their family, friends or colleagues.
