If you or someone you care for is feeling a little less steady on their feet, a free Strength & Balance Programme could help improve confidence, mobility and muscle strength.
Run by the Essex Strength & Balance Service, this 12-week programme is designed for people aged 65 and over who are independently mobile but may have noticed changes in their balance, strength or confidence. It may also be suitable for people recovering from a stay in hospital who have lost muscle strength. In some cases, people who are close to the age of 65 may also be eligible.
Classes are currently available at:
Great Easton Village Hall and Golden Acre Community Centre, Saffron Walden
Before starting the programme, participants receive a thorough home assessment from a physiotherapist or trained instructor. They will also be given simple exercises to do at home, along with follow-up support throughout the programme.
The service is available to people who are registered with a GP and is completely free of charge.
How to get referred
You can ask your GP to refer you, or professionals can make a direct referral by emailing Maria.Woodlock@nelft.nhs.uk.
For self-referrals and more information, contact the Essex Strength & Balance Service on 0300 300 1843 or visit the service’s website.
Staying active and maintaining strength can make a real difference to everyday life, helping people remain independent and reducing the risk of falls. If you think this programme could benefit you or someone you care for, we’d encourage you to find out more.
