We’re sharing our ‘Volunteer Stories’ to inspire others to donate their time to supporting carers, their families and the people they care for.
Say hello to… Angel!
Angel, tell us where you volunteer?
At one of the Young Carer Clubs
How long have you volunteered at AFFC?
I have volunteered at AFFC for a year now
Why did you decide to volunteer at AFFC?
I like volunteering because I like to help people and interacting with the children by chatting with them. Playing games is a fun way of getting to know each other. I had previously volunteered at a SEND youth club where I would help those children in need of help. Then I had heard of AFFC and thought I would have a change and give it a go and see if I would enjoy it. I especially enjoy working with the leader called Debbie she is a great role model.
Tell us a little bit about your role, what do you do?
I help organise the evening with the leader and help to set up the lap top for music and dancing. When we all do Arts and Crafts at the table I sit and talk to the children and go around the tables and offer to take part in their activities and games. I help the organiser lead to think of exciting venues and trips out for exciting adventures. When asked I take photos of the children who we have permission to while doing an activity.
At the end of the club when all of the children have been picked up, I help the club leader to tidy up and get thigs back to normal. I help get everything loaded into the leaders car and we have a chat about how we think the club went and what our plans are for the next club meeting.
What’s been a highlight for you at AFFC?
My biggest highlight was when I saw the children’s faces light up when they saw the Gaming Bus. I knew it was the correct choice to bring to the leaders attention. It was really great recently when the children came together and we all had a water fight, needless to say, I got soaked.
What would you say to anyone thinking about volunteering with us?
I would say come and join us as it is very rewarding to see how happy the children are.
And finally, what’s your favourite biscuit?
