Our history
At Action for Family Carers, we’ve been supporting carers in Essex for decades. We were founded by Carers for Carers and have been making a positive difference to the lives of unpaid family Carers ever since. We’ve got 3 offices right here in Essex and over the years we have built a huge knowledge of our local communities.
Action for Family Carers is a Carers Trust Network Partner, having previously been a member of the Princess Royal Trust for Carers which merged with Crossroads nationally to form Carers Trust in 2012, of which we were a Founding Member.
1980s
A group of friends in Maldon got together and decided there was a need to support other local Carers in the local area. As Carers themselves, they understood the challenges of a caring role and the need to share knowledge and advice with others in a similar situation. They established the Carer’s Information & Advice Resource Centre where Carers could come for support, information, advice and guidance.
1990
The organisation was registered with the Charity Commission as the Maldon Carers Centre, reflecting its location at Brickhouse Farm, Maldon.
We started providing a Day Care service to give Carers a break, alongside information and advice.
2005
Our Young Carers service was established and we gradually expanded to offer support across other parts of Mid Essex.
2008
We changed our name to Action for Family Carers to reflect the expanded geographic remit of our service.
2012
We became a Founding Member of Carers Trust and achieved PQASSO Level 1 Quality Award
2013
Introduction of Volunteer-led Counselling Service
2014
Achievement of PQASSO Level 2 Quality Award. Conference on Carers and The Care Act
2015
We merged with Caring for Harlow Carers to form our West Essex support service. We still operate from the offices at Wych Elm in Harlow.
2017
Achievement of PQASSO Level 3 Quality Award
Today
We are still based in Brickhouse Farm in Maldon, Essex but have offices in Colchester and Harlow. We now support both Young and Adult Carers across the county of Essex.
