Diana’s Story: Caring for two, learning to care for herself

Feb 11, 2026Case Study, General

Diana lives in West Essex and is a dual carer, supporting both her partner and her elderly parent. She lives with and cares for her partner, who has an autoimmune condition, while also providing full-time care for her parent, who lives in another county. Diana is relied upon to do all aspects of her parent’s care as her parent is reluctant to accept any outside help.

Caring for two people means Diana spends a significant amount of her time travelling between households, juggling responsibilities and constantly putting others first. She moved to Essex to support her partner but hadn’t realised just how much the combined caring roles would affect her own wellbeing.

With so much of her time and energy focused on caring, Diana had little space left for herself. The financial strain of frequent travel added to her stress, impacting her mental health. Even her relationship with her partner began to suffer, as Diana spent much of her day organising care and preparing everything before leaving to support her parent.

Diana was referred to Action for Family Carers by Adult Social Services and connected to her local Carer Support Worker. During an in-depth conversation, Diana was able to talk openly about the realities of her caring role and how overwhelmed she was feeling. Using Carers Star, they identified key areas where support could ease some of the pressure and help Diana prioritise her wellbeing.

Through these conversations, Diana recognised the emotional toll caring for two loved ones was having on her. She was referred into Action for Family Carers’ free counselling service, giving her space to process her feelings and begin focusing on her own mental health.

Practical support also made a difference. Diana’s support worker helped her access a Carers Trust grant to contribute towards fuel costs for her travel between households – lifting some of the financial strain.

“The Carers Trust grant to help towards fuel costs has been a great help and relief.”

Recognising the importance of time away from her caring role, Diana also applied for a Time4You grant. With this, she was able to enjoy special meals out with her daughter – something she wouldn’t have been able to afford otherwise. With her daughter expecting a baby, these moments became precious opportunities to reconnect, relax, and make memories as Diana looks forward to becoming a nan.

“We had such a fantastic time making such wonderful memories with quality time, which is so important! A huge thank you to you all—it really does mean the world.”

Although Diana’s caring responsibilities remain the same, the support she’s received has helped her shift focus back to her own wellbeing. Having someone to listen, guidance on accessing grants, and reassurance that she isn’t alone has made a real difference.

“I am feeling very well supported – thank you to you and Action for Family Carers.”

Diana’s story shows how the right support – emotional, practical and financial – can help carers feel recognised, supported and able to keep going, even when their caring role doesn’t change.
