Jo first joined one of our Young Carer Clubs in 2022, life was tough. Caring for their mum, who lives with fibromyalgia and seizures, meant that even simple family days out weren’t possible. On top of that, Jo had just started senior school a big change at an already difficult time. Feeling isolated, they didn’t have many chances to relax, make friends, or just be themselves.
That’s when things began to change. By coming to club regularly, this Young Carer found a safe space where they could take a break from their caring role. They started building friendships with other young carers who really understood what life was like at home, and soon those friendships grew into connections they could carry outside of the club too.
Over the past three years, the transformation has been incredible. Jo has formed strong, trusted relationships with our staff, knowing there’s always someone to talk to after a tough week. Most importantly, they’ve grown into a confident and resilient young person – proof of just how much difference a supportive community and regular respite can make.
The consistent support from staff, peer friendships, and time for themselves have all played a huge part in Jo’s journey.
Jo’s Club Lead says: “We’re so proud of how far they’ve come, and we’re excited to see where their confidence takes them next.”
